To my dear Miss Emily

As I begin this new blogging adventure, dedicated to the love and enjoyment of reading, I must pay homage to Miss Emily Dickinson. Her love of exploration and discovery, and her skill at distilling her thoughts and experiences into poetry have inspired and awed me for years. I have many favorite authors, and many favorite poets, all of whom I hope to talk about on this blog. But Miss Emily is where I begin. Among her many topics, death is one that she faced head on. I have appreciated her honesty and her faith, which shine through her beautifully crafted words.

Death is a dialogue between
The spirit and the dust.
"Dissolve," says Death. The Spirit, "Sir,
I have another trust."

Death doubts it, argues from the ground.
The Spirit turns away,
Just laying off, for evidence,
An overcoat of clay.

Poem XXXI from Time and Eternity Collection
